2011-11-12 HS Football: EL vs Agawam (Senior Day)

Plenty of sun, plenty of love, and plenty of Anthony Vega as the Spartans trounced the Brownies of Agawam, 34-13, on Senior Day at EL’s new stadium. Vega, one of 10 seniors lauded before the game, was outstanding on both sides of the ball, returning an interception for a touchdown, downing an EL punt on the Agawam 1 yard line, and generally being in the middle of it all!

2011-11-24 HS Football: Longmeadow vs EL (Selectman’s Cup)

The Lancers were more than ready for the task of taking on their cross-town rival Spartans. Displaying speed, size and confidence, the home team ground out a 35-14 victory on Thanksgiving Day, dashing any Spartan hope of a playoff slot. After spotting a 28-0 halftime deficit, EL got on the board in the 3rd period on a fantastic leaping catch by Sam Blake. Rob Holden hauled in the 2-point conversion toss. Nick Cutler scampered 9 yards for the Spartans’ final TD in the 4th period.

2011-11-18 HS Girl’s Soccer: Peabody edges East Longmeadow, 1-0 in State D1 Final

A truly amazing season came to an end at the hands (and feet) of a strong (and nationally ranked) Peabody team at Worcester State University. Except for a fluke Peabody goal in the first half, the eventual game winner, it looked like 2 nationally-ranked teams going at each other – the game was so evenly played! Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities, but each defense did what it did best: snuff them out.

Spartan goalie, Ann Stack, had 10 saves in the effort.

We say goodby to 8 outstanding young women who played their last match as ELHS seniors … Becca Mercieri, Sarah Waltsak, Jess Kazyaka, Devon Wolfenden, Liz Weithofer, Alexa Allen, Alyssa Balboni, and Gabi Rate. Your leadership and playmaking will be missed!

But watch out for next year’s team …
